PASEO COLORADO: A GREAT PLACE TO GET DUMPED!
Doris Fleckner was no raving beauty. Her skin was bad, her hair was dry, and dogs... well, they practically followed her down the street. So, nobody was very surprised when her boyfriend gave her the boot.
It happened last September. Doris's boyfriend of three months called and asked her to meet him by the fountain at PASEO COLORADO (the shopping center in old town). He wanted to discuss something important. "Something important?" Doris asked herself. "Will this involve a bended knee? Will I be getting a diamond ring?”
What Doris got was dumped. Sitting alone on a bench, Doris watched as shoppers and diners passed her by, laughing and holding hands. Numbness washed over her. As evening wore on, a little boy in a baseball cap sat down next to her and asked why she looked so sad. She said, "Because life stinks."
The little boy took off his cap, put it on her head and said, "Gee, lady, it ain't all that bad. Try to be happy! Work at it!" The little boy was bald. Shame washed over Doris, rinsing away the numbness that had washed over her earlier. "Work at it, lady!" said the boy.
Doris got up, reached into her purse and pulled out her credit card. "He's right," she said. "by gosh, I'll work at it!" A wave of optimism washed over her, rinsing away the shame that had washed over her a moment earlier. She marched through the bosom of PASEO COLORADO swung open the doors of glamorous Sephora, and glided to the fragrance counter. Dousing herself with a cloud of Dior, she announced, “I’ll take a bottle of this and the Givenchy and the Hermes and the Gucci and the Cartier!”
A nervous little saleslady fluttered around the shelves, grabbing bottles and tossing them into Doris’s shopping bag. “And don’t forget the Bulgari, Madame!," sang the woman, "The Bulgari, the Bulgari!”
“And the Bulgari!” trumpeted Doris, making an instant friend. Doris flew toward the door, grabbing a brush and slathering on some Urban Daily Makeup eyeliner and lip gloss on her way out!
Doris skipped up the PASEO to Happy Nails for a quick pedicure before descending on the fabulous HUGO BOSS, where everything looks austere and black and white and gray. Doris bought herself a fabulous but austere low-cut blouse in black and white and gray, leaving her sweatsuit in the dressing room. She then walked across the courtyard to Harry and David and sent herself a fruit basket.
At Paseo Jewelers, she pulled out her credit card and left the store wearing a set of glittering diamond earrings and a jewel encrusted pendant called Divine Disarray® “How appropriate!” she said to herself. “And now it’s time for a snack!”
Upstairs, at the Yard House, Doris met a periodontist in a Tony Bahamas Hawaiian shirt, watching TV at the bar. Winking at her, he said, “Do you like to watch TV, young lady?” Oddly enough, that was Doris’s favorite pastime!
Doris wondered, was this kismet, coincidence, or simply Divine Will? Perhaps it wall all three, for Doris and the periodontist had found their Happy Ever After. And while it’s been only two weeks, and the periodontist is married and an alcoholic, Doris is filled with hope and joy and she wakes up every morning, anxiously awaiting his call.
And so, if you find yourself walking under a cloud, take a stroll down to PASEO COLORADO and have a seat by the bubbling fountain. Maybe a little bald boy with an infectious smile will sit down next to you. “Cheer up, Lady!" he might say. "Life ain’t that bad! Ya got to work at it!” Yes, perhaps you'll meet the little boy who holds the precious secret that all of us need to hear and that more of us need to live by... Shopping Heals.
